Just Hangin' Out.

Posted by Lee (Fort Frances Ontario, Canada) on 23 February 2009 in Animal & Insect and Portfolio.

I was able to watch some bear cubs last fall. They really are quite playful. Sometimes it seems they even play to the camera. This pose is one of my favourite shots. He just looked right at me, as if wondering why I was looking at him. Stay tuned, there is a mate to this shot in a few days.

Denise from Perry, United States

He seems so relaxed, how close were you? Did you just use a zoom or blow this up a bit? IT is so crisp that I think he can smell you.

23 Feb 2009 10:44am

@Denise: I was pretty close. I used my 70-300mm lens. He was as interested in me as I was in him.

Mary from PA, United States

Oh wow!! This is too cute! It makes it so easy to forget they are wild.
Our neighbors experiences with bears are that the bears come too close...right up to the house and try to get in. Other people sometimes feed them and that's not a good thing to do. Makes for bad situations.

23 Feb 2009 2:23pm

@Mary: A person must always respect an animals space. Never invade their territory. Always give them room to do their own thing. A powerful telephoto lens help to ensure this. That way all encounters are pleasantly memorable. Thank you for dropping by and sharing your story.

Hema Iyer from Bangalore, India

Awesome shot. Great work. You are so close to the bear. Isnt it dangerous?

23 Feb 2009 2:41pm

@Hema Iyer: Hema, yes I was close, about 300' away. However, my vehicle was beside me with the door open. A strong telephoto lens helps also.

Ben from Harz, Germany

but it looks like he have some problems getting down from the tree...

23 Feb 2009 4:17pm

@shallowregret: I never thought of it that way. However, He and his sibling were already in the tree. Friday's shot will show his climbing partner.
