Silly Chickadee

Posted by Lee (Fort Frances Ontario, Canada) on 5 May 2009 in Animal & Insect and Portfolio.

It's Silly Tuesday.
Here we go again. For a whole week I've been looking for the clear scaled icicle fish. I must have missed them this year. The ice is just about off the lake, if I don't find one soon I'll have to wait till next year. They also migrate north for the summer.
However, all is not lost. As you can see I did find the not so rare upside down chickadee. Not only do they feed upside down, they fly on their backs. I know this may be hard to believe, but they do. You'll just have to trust me on this one.

Thank you for visiting my site. I consider myself to be lucky living where I do. Everyday I wake up to a wealth of interesting visual scenarios. Most of my pictures are Wildlife and Nature taken from around the area. The area specifically being Fort Frances Ontario on beautiful Rainy Lake. Feel free to comment on what you see. I look forward to hearing from you. If you like what you see, please rate it. Better yet, bookmark the site and drop back often. I will be posting daily.

P J W Miller from Chase Terrace, United Kingdom

My Little Chickadee (1940) is a Universal comedy/western motion picture starring Mae West and W. C. Fields, with Joseph Calleia. Doubt whether you remember that but it reminded me of the title of the film

5 May 2009 6:54am

@P J W Miller: I actually do remember the movie quite well. I watched it as a kid. Thank you for the comment.

Brett from McAllen, United States

Wow. These birds are a rare breed indeed. Flying backwards, hmmm, that sounds like it might be a southern hemisphere bird that is migrating north for the summer.

5 May 2009 8:06pm

@Brett: You know I never thought of that. Thanks Brett, I'll check that out. Great Silly Tuesday shot today.

shallowregret from Kongsberg, Norway

no trusting unless you can produce a shot of them flying upside down

5 May 2009 9:05pm

@shallowregret: That's a challenge. I make no promises, We'll see what time holds. Oh ye of little faith.

Vinman from Essex, United Kingdom

Bet they have to wear sunglasses if they're looking upward all the time. Maybe next week you'll have a shot of one wearing Aviators (ouch!).

5 May 2009 9:10pm

@Vinman: Did you not notice? He has UV protective shaded grey toner contact lenses in place just for that reason. The sun is bright and harmful. Thyank you for your comments.

Kathe from Marquette, Michigan, United States

They're not called black-capped chickadees for nothin'. Because they fly upside-down, they tend to bang their little heads into things so often that they are permanently bruised.

Right, Lee?

5 May 2009 11:06pm

@Kathe: That is probably how they got their name. You could be right.

Viewfinder from Bradenton, FL, United States

Perfect little acrobat.

5 May 2009 11:25pm

@Viewfinder: Thank you. That they are for sure.
