Water Ostriches

Posted by Lee (Fort Frances Ontario, Canada) on 2 June 2009 in Animal & Insect and Portfolio.

It's Silly Tuesday again.
# 178.
Do you think it's possible? I was out and about yesterday, kinda overcast and cool. I noticed a flock of Web Footed Water Ostrich. I tried to grab a shot to show you. Every time I pressed the shutter release they would bury their heads in the water. They are quick. And boy can they hold their breath a long time.
I will have to go back and see if I can find them again. For it to be species 178, I will need much better details.

Thank you for visiting my site. I consider myself to be lucky living where I do. Everyday I wake up to a wealth of interesting visual scenarios. Most of my pictures are Wildlife and Nature taken from around the area. The area specifically being Fort Frances Ontario on beautiful Rainy Lake. Feel free to comment on what you see. I look forward to hearing from you. If you like what you see, please rate it. Better yet, bookmark the site and drop back often. I will be posting daily.

Sarah from Switzerland

I won't even tell you that I (again) forgot it was Silly Tuesday and sat here for about 10 seconds admiring the shot before I realised that I couldn't tell which end was up.... *SIGH* I used to think I was reasonably intelligent before I "met" you, Lee! Well done - AGAIN!

WHAT THE HECK??!! Okay, how did you do this one? It's morning, I'm hungry, and confused.

2 Jun 2009 12:38pm

@Shanny: It was quite easy actually. I was sitting in my truck with the window down. When they swam by I started to click. They were trying to catch lunch I think.

Don from spokane, United States

What strange behavior. Anyway, you got some fine action shots even if the action was not quite what you envisioned! :-)

2 Jun 2009 2:46pm

@Don: Thanks Don. They are Pelicans fisshing. Seems when one plunges after a fish, they all do in unison. There is a lot of kicking goes on while they're heads are submerged.

Susan from Fort Lauderdale, FL, United States

ok, so i don't know how much of this tale is true, or how gullible I am... "water ostriches" ??? They look like good ol' ducks to me!!! And if so, you are the silliest thing around today!!!

2 Jun 2009 4:28pm

@Susan: It is Silly Tuesday. I do apologize if I lead you astray. These are really White Pelicans. Seem when one plunges after a fish they all do is almost unison. I thought the shot was different a humorous. The Web-Footed Water Ostrich was just my sick sense of humor. I am glad you enjoyed viewing it. Thank you for the compliment.

Vinman from Essex, United Kingdom

Looks like they're practising synchronised swimming for the next Olympics here in the U.K. Joking aside, I like the way you've framed this with the water droplets.

2 Jun 2009 10:22pm

@Vinman: LOL. That's a good one. Thanks for the compliment.

Sandrine from Cincinnati, United States

Great action capture!!!!!

3 Jun 2009 2:06am

@Sandrine: Thank you Sandrine.

LauraS from Chico, United States

What do you have all day to wait for this special, special shots? Or are you really underwater, coaxing them to you with food? Great ST shot.

3 Jun 2009 3:14am

@LauraS: No coaxing. No food. And I do not wait any longer than I need to. I actually plane where I'm going before I go out. I do not always get to see what I hoped. Sometimes it works for me. I was actually sitting in my vehicle when I took this shot. I shot it from the drivers seat. I watched them for about thirty minutes.

Pierre from Mâcon, France

Perfect synchronism ! well done , great picture

4 Jun 2009 2:08pm

7 Jun 2009 3:58pm

@BIG SIS and Brother-inlaw: Thanks Wendy, Mark. Take care.

Japanalia from Yokohama, Japan

What a great capture here! It looks like they are fighting with the water OR that the water is trying hard to swallow the birds! You were just on time!
